Contingency plans activated as 259 SPM candidates affected by floods
17+ min ago (257+ words) Tuesday, 25 Nov 2025 PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has activated contingency plans to support Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates who were affected by the floods, said Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad. He said 259 candidates had been affected by floods as of 5pm Sunday (Nov 23), but all were either relocated to safer accommodations or assisted by government agencies to reach their exam centres. He said the Education Ministry began flood-risk mapping as early as September, identifying students living in flood-prone areas or near rivers. "We already know how many students will be affected if flooding occurs, so we took action early. "All 16 state education departments have also informed me as of 6.30am that the SPM written exams are proceeding as planned," he said during a visit to SMK Putrajaya Presint 11(1) on Tuesday (Nov 25). Smooth start for SPM written exams in Penang

Penang state education director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad said a total of 20,060 SPM candidates are sitting for the exams at 156 designated examination centres in the state. RM73.81mil in sugar tax collected from Jan-Nov, says Finance Ministry

The ministry said the SSB duty was first imposed on July 1, 2019, at 40 sen per litre based on set sugar content thresholds. The rate was later increased to 50 sen per litre from Jan 1, 2024, and again to 90 sen per litre from Jan 1, 2025. It said the higher rate was among measures introduced to curb the consumption of high-sugar drinks among Malaysians and to support the Health Ministry's War on Sugar campaign. From July 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2024, the SSB duty brought in RM447.54mil. With the RM73.81mil collected between January and November this year, total revenue from the tax now stands at RM521.35mil.
